Additional When Technology Fails: A Manual for Self-Reliance & Planetary Survival Information

When Technology Fails is a practical "how to" manual that helps people to prepare for and deal with disruptions in the normal course of life. In today's world of terrorist acts and super storms, it is an invaluable reference covering a wide variety of subjects such as emergency preparedness, survival, first aid, renewable energy, alternative healing, sustainable agriculture, green-building technologies, and low-tech methods for providing the basics for yourself if deprived of access to the comforts of modern living. Each chapter also includes a "Whole Earth Catalog" style reference guide to the best books, organizations and web sites relevant to that chapter's topic. In today's world of terrorism, global warming, super-storms, record breaking floods, severe droughts, antiquated and overloaded electrical distribution systems, it is likely that most of us will see significant disruptions in the flow of electricity and goods at some point in our lives. An old Chinese! saying asks, "Is it not already too late if one waits until one is thirsty to begin digging a well?" This saying applies equally at both the personal and planetary levels. On the micro level (personal survival), a little planning, training, education and individual action can significantly reduce one's sense of helplessness. On the macro level (global sustainability), large numbers of people must be awakened to the need for change before governments and the majority of businesses make a sustainable future their number one priority. On both levels, action is required to promote a positive outcome. We live in the "Information Age" and knowledge is power. When Technology Fails is an exceptional source of information, providing something of value for almost everyone, ranging from the environmentalist who wishes to reduce man's impact on the planet to the average person who simply wishes to provide for friends and family in the event of an emergency.

What Customers Say About When Technology Fails: A Manual for Self-Reliance & Planetary Survival:

Whether it be peak oil or a mid-summer thunderstorm that knocks your power out for a few days, this book gives you the means to deal with it and is a bible of self sufficiency. The other reviews tell the story more eloquently than I can. All I can say is that the book is excellent and I give it as a gift to those I care about.

It's not exactly comforting to contemplate the devolution of civilization as we know it. But numerous trends are converging to make it likely that the not-too-distant future will look very different than the life of ease to which Americans have become accustomed. When Technology Fails actually helps me feel better about scary scenarios, because Matthew Stein not only sees clearly some possible futures, he provides detailed, practical instructions on how to survive and thrive in times of climate change, food insecurity, oil depletion, water crises, and more.Stein's book embodies a rare combination of clear-headed, heartful philosophy with nuts-and-bolts advice. The topics range from mental attitude to first aid, disaster preparedness to long-term skills for creating home, food, clothing, and health.I wouldn't want to be without this book, and I'm grateful to Matthew Stein for having written it.

replace coal-burning power plants11. It had a few good ideas but is was more about the author's philosophy. rebuild our industries6. "when technology fails" page 461.8. reach out to developing countries10. rebuild our cities3. change the tax structure - cap & trade2.

rebuild our railways, waterways, and mass transit systems4. rebuild our homes, office buildings, and factories5. "when technology fails" is misleading to the content of the book. On a planet where the estimated long-term carrying capacity is on the order of 1 to 2 billion people, if we can't control our own population growth, nature will do it for us. Most people would agree that it is much more humane to provide family-planning eduction and birth control materials for all people on earth than for the population to find its natural level through starvation, plagues, and wars. share the wealth9. EVEN THOUGH THE TITLE MAY PUT IT IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS "THE SAS HANDBOOK" OR "HOW TO SURVIVE THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT" YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED IN THIS BOOK.IF YOU BELIEVE IN GLOBAL WARMING AND GOING GREEN ALL THE WAY, BY ALL MEANS BUY THIS BOOK. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SURVIVAL OR BACK TO NATURE BOOK FOR CAMPING, THIS IS NOT IT.

To give you a better idea of what I am speaking of before you decide to buy this book; this is chapter 16 Making the shift to sustainability.Plan B 1. global relocalization12. fund and support renewable energy development7. eliminate population growth (I had to write the whole caption under this one)Reduce global population to the point where the population of our planet levels off, followed by a decline in world population. make decisions based on sustainabilityDO YOU NOW UNDERSTAND WHY IT WASN'T EXACTLY WHAT I EXPECTED FROM THE TITLE.WHY DID I TYPE THIS. IT IS VERY WELL WRITTEN.

I am really enjoying this book. It has alot of really interesting things that could really help you out.

This is a must have considering todays' uncertain times. An excellent reference book on everthing from growing food to delivering babies. Just hope it never comes to that.
